A shocking fact is that the target is not limited to any specific businesses. In addition, these criticisms can be directed at people who have no public presence. Since the perpetrator is on the public internet, they may use a fake name and email account to hide their identity.

One of the most basic practices is defamation litigation. Litigation is a long and expensive process, and defamation lawsuits are not easy, especially if the defendant is out of state. But let’s not get into the details of defamation suits and other legal remedies.

Forbes.com recently published an article about the Ripoff Report (ROR). The article discusses how they can affect your business and what you can do to eliminate them. However, it is unlikely that the ROR will be eliminated. Let’s say you win a lawsuit against the perpetrator. At that point, it is still unlikely that the ROR will remove the report from their website. More simply, it’s the bread and butter of a scam. The Ripoff Report website makes money from these complaints through advertising and arbitration.

We have encountered this problem with one of our clients, who we call “Client A”.

Client A was named in one of the ROR comments. This story was fabricated and distorted. Irritated by these false accusations, Client A undertook to sue the author. Fortunately, Client A was able to identify the author in question. In short, the author apologized in writing.

However, there was another major problem: how to remove the report from the ROR site. The author has no authority or rights related to the content submitted to the site. Once a report is published, the ROR website has the right to decide whether or not to remove it.

Many complaints have been made against fraud sites where authors have specifically requested the removal of their content. Unfortunately, many of these have not been successful. This was the case with client A.

For almost three years, the Ripoff Report was next to Client A’s website in Google’s SERPs. This annoyed Client A because it represented their business poorly when people searched for it on Google. None of the web apps mentioned above were able to help Client A.

So a client called us and asked our SEO and web reputation management specialists to provide a solution.

We analyzed the whole situation and saw the result of the legal action. We advised Client A to consider this negative reputation as a starting point for off-page SEO and web reputation management and make it a priority.

Next, optimize your social networks. Social networks tend to rank higher in search results than other sites. Identify and list which social networks appear on the first page of Google and which ones you want to appear. If your website does not have an online social presence, now is the time to invest in social media.

The social media networks most likely to appear on the first page of Google are Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Pinterest, LinkedIn, Instagram, and Flickr. we also recommend having a presence on YouTube; optimizing your channel will put it on the first page. Likewise, BlogSpot, Tumblr, and WordPress, as these can also play an important role.

Optimizing social media networks requires consistency and commitment. Positive interaction with followers and fans is essential. Update your social networks regularly with more information, status updates and pictures/videos. If these three points are not followed consistently, social network profiles are unlikely to rank well on results pages.

As mentioned earlier, this is part of an online reputation strategy. But we haven’t mentioned the second part of off-page optimization.
